I then rebooted again and I got to be what looked like a catalina recovery. I tried to restore from time machine backup in that internet recovery but it didn't work and said something along the lines "the recovery partition can't be created" if I remember correctly. From there, I was able to properly format the disk as mac os extended journaled. I then used internet recovery and it booted into what looked to be a mountain lion recovery. However, I didn't format the disk properly at first, so the computer didn't boot.
